What Shoes Should I Wear To Workout In?

It may sound like a silly question, and you may think the answer is “athletic shoes, duh!” However, certain shoes are better than others for different types of exercise. When it comes to lifting weights and strength training, the shoes you wear could make all the difference, especially when training legs!

Running shoes are designed with arch support and lots of cushion in the soles to help absorb the shock when running, but when you’re strength training, this extra cushion can lead to a less stable foot and ankle. So, save the running shoes for higher impact, cardio based workouts.

If you’re training upper body, your shoes won’t have THAT much of an impact on your overall form and functionality, so you can usually wear whatever shoe you find to be the most comfortable. If you’re training lower body, however, you definitely want to choose a shoe with a flat, hard sole, or train barefoot.

My favorite shoes for lifting are the No Bull Trainers or Vivo Barefoot, but you could also opt for something like Vans, Converse, or Nike Blazers.

If you don’t have any of these shoes available and aren’t ready to invest in a new pair, training in just socks works just as good, and helps to strengthen your foot and ankle, as long as your gym is clean, safe, and allows barefoot training.

When it comes to your fitness, make sure you’re setting yourself up for success, starting from the ground up!
